At one of the gaming industries events in Amsterdam, the industry felt that Microsoft would use the event to announce the Xbox 360 games lineup for its release in North America and Europe. The problem with that is it didn't happen. In its place is more confusion on what Xbox 360 games that will be available.
Peter Moore the corporate vice president of Xbox marketing and publishing bragged that there were 200 Xbox 360 games in development at the time. At the same time Chief Xbox officer Robbie Bach just promised they would have the best games and launch lineup of any console yet. But neither would list all the games that will go on sale in November of that year at the launch of the Xbox 360 in the United States.
Now to add to the confusion is a Microsoft press release titled "Xbox 360 launch line-up announced". It has only three first party games listed under a heading a heading of “Titles that will form part of an impressive Christmas holiday portfolio. Project Gotham Racing 3, Perfect Dark Zero and Kameio Elements of Power. Then they have a second category of games called "Other great games" announced or shown at X05 that included FIFA 06, Saint’s Row, Too Human, Crackdown, just to name a few.
The finally the release listed a third category, "Franchise titles that will make their debut on Xbox 360" this included Superman Returns: The Videogame, Call of Duty 2, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 4 and more. Now the fact that about half of these have 2006 release dates and some were just announced it would be impossible for the game to be contained in the Xbox 360 launch lineup as the title indicates.
A effort to clear up the confusion David Reid, director of platform marketing for the Xbox 360 was asked exactly what games would be available at the launch. He stated there would be 15-20 Xbox 360 titles available on launch day and another half–dozen by the end of the year. So more double speak? He would only confirm eight being available on November 22. They are Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Madden NFL 06, NBA Live 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, Need for Speed Most Wanted, and FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup.
As for the other seven to twelve Xbox 360 games that were to be available, Reid stated they would be announced in the next few weeks. According to him "They are currently in the final stages of certification" this is referring to the quality assurance process all third party games must go through from each console maker. With that said it would be likely if any of the submitted games that were not mentioned did not pass this process it will not be available at the time of Xbox 360 release on November 22 in North America.
The decision to rush games is a two headed sword. On one hand, release dates are made for a reason: to take advantage of a holiday sales season. On the other hand, thanks to word of mouth and game sites the gamer of today can tell if a game was rushed and a games reputation can be destroyed faster than it was built. In the Xbox 360's case there has been an extreme amount of pre release publicity and hype, which will make or break the success of the console and games themselves.
Three of the games that were verified to be available on release date are Microsoft titles and they would have an advantage. But none of the twelve titles are make or break titles for the Xbox 360 so the console should be spared, and hopefully PS3 will have the same launch questions.
As with any Microsoft release the Xbox 360 is shrouded in rumor, speculation, and expectation. Microsoft fuels this by being very closed mouth with any specific information. It looks like right now we can just sit and wait.

AFP leaves secret documents on hotel computer

Confidential Australian diplomatic cables and police documents were left in open files on a computer and read by guests at a hotel in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu.
At least 20 police photographs of the charred bodies of plane crash victims, including those of two Victorians, were also left in open files on a computer and could be seen by guests for three weeks. The security breach included information about an Australian Federal Police agent meeting a CIA operative in Kathmandu last month.
In a personal email that was left on a computer at Kathmandu's Radisson Hotel, an Australian agent expressed surprise at meeting the CIA operative who "looks like a bit of a footy jock but covered with some huge ... tattoos (stacks of them) and dressed like a total backpacker".
The security breach included a seven-page document detailing priorities and strategies for the AFP's office in Bangladesh, including information about sharing intelligence with foreign agencies.
One document marked "protected" detailed a meeting an AFP agent had with a secret foreign military organisation where sensitive security intelligence was discussed, including recent terrorist attacks in India.
The document revealed information about two fundamentalist Islamic groups that were still operating in south Asia despite public reports that they were not.
It revealed plans to "carefully monitor" a political party in south Asia whose leaders included "Soviet-Afghan war veterans".
The document stressed that information the organisation provided to the Australian agent was against "protocol".
"On that basis and to protect the sources and the relationship (between the AFP and the organisation) it would be encouraged that this information is treated on a sensitive need-to-know basis," an AFP agent wrote.
A copy of another document marked "consular-in-confidence" was a cable sent to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra from Australia's ambassador in Kathmandu, Graeme Lade, on October 9, the day after a plane crashed while landing at a remote airfield near Mount Everest.
Mr Lade wrote in the cable about the efforts to recover and identify the bodies of 18 victims, including Melbourne pair Andrew Frick McLeod, 31, and his girlfriend Charlene Kate Zamudio, 24.
Mr Lade also reported to Canberra on the arrival in Kathmandu of The Age's Delhi correspondent, Matt Wade, and the questions he was asking about the crash.
Any breach involving confidential Australian diplomatic cables is regarded seriously by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which has a sophisticated distribution system to prevent and track leaks.
Copies of the cable were restricted in Australia to four senior department officers, senior AFP officers, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith and his advisers. The Age was given copies of the material by a guest of the Radisson's business centre who was outraged that such sensitive material was left for anybody to see on computers available for public use.
The guest, a non-government worker, deleted documents that were on a USB memory stick left in one computer. Three weeks later the same guest found gruesome photographs of the crash victims on another computer in the business centre that were marked as police exhibits.
"I deleted them as well," said the guest, who asked not to be identified. "It would have been deeply disturbing for any of the victims' relatives to have seen the photographs or read some of the documents."

Any breach involving confidential Australian diplomatic cables is regarded seriously by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which has a sophisticated distribution system to prevent and track leaks.
Copies of the cable were restricted in Australia to four senior department officers, senior AFP officers, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith and his advisers. The Age was given copies of the material by a guest of the Radisson's business centre who was outraged that such sensitive material was left for anybody to see on computers available for public use.
The guest, a non-government worker, deleted documents that were on a USB memory stick left in one computer. Three weeks later the same guest found gruesome photographs of the crash victims on another computer in the business centre that were marked as police exhibits.
"I deleted them as well," said the guest, who asked not to be identified. "It would have been deeply disturbing for any of the victims' relatives to have seen the photographs or read some of the documents."

Budget laptops are a tough market for manufacturers. They have to produce quality systems for as little as possible and that often involves trade offs in hardware or software features. Below are the best value based laptop PC computers available for under US$750 based upon my research and experience.
1. Lenovo IdeaPad Y530
What makes the IdeaPad Y530 the top choice? The fact that it is using some of the latest technology for laptops and placing them in a low cost option. It uses the Intel GM45 chipset that supports faster DDR3 memory, comes with a draft 802.11n wireless network controller and the new GMA X4500 graphics processor. Combine this with a sizable 250GB hard drive and this laptop has just about everything that a person might need in a low cost laptop. The only real downside is that Lenovo used an older 32-bit Pentium Dual-Core processor rather than a newer Core 2 Duo, thus limiting its overall processing power.
2. Acer Aspire AS5920-6959
Those looking for higher performance and lots of storage space for applications and data would be best served by the Aspire AS5920-6595. At the heart of the system is an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 dual core processor. This is one of the higher grade processors that you will find in the budget market and provides the system with a good overall level of performance. The 320GB hard drive is the largest that one will find in the sub $750 laptop market. This is anywhere from 50 to 100 percent larger than what other companies have in their budget laptops. The downside is that it is one of the larger 15.4-inch laptops on the market.
3. Gateway M-6843
This was one of the first budget laptops to feature the Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 processor for the budget laptop segment. It has been out for several months now sold through Best Buy and it appears to now be an outlet item that is being phased out. This means that the system can be found for some very discounted prices. In addition to the faster processor, Gateway also outfitted the red laptop with 3GB of memory that allows the system to run better with the Vista operating system. Some may be disappointed that there is no FireWire port on the unit. The speakers also tend to have static on them when the unit is playing audio while not plugged into an AC outlet.

Dell's Inspiron 1525 is one of the older models on the market that has gone through a wide range of changes over the years. This can make shopping for it a bit more difficult. Top 15 Ways to Extend Your Laptop’s Battery Life

Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you’re constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up. How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible? Here are 15 easy ways to do so.
1. Defrag regularly - The faster your hard drive does its work - less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.
2. Dim your screen - Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.
3. Cut down on programs running in the background. Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.
4. Cut down external devices - USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.
5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.
6. Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD - As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming. They spin, taking power, even when they?re not actively being used. Wherever possible, try to run on virtual drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.
7. Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.
8. Take care of your battery - Exercise the Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)
9. Hibernate not standby - Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.
10. Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner, or refer to some extra tips by LapTopMag.com.
11. Set up and optimize your power options - Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).
12. Don’t multitask - Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed!
13. Go easy on the PC demands - The more you demand from your PC. Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD. If you’ve got a single battery charge - pick your priorities wisely.
14. Get yourself a more efficient laptop - Laptops are getting more and more efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries. Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix.

Prevent the Memory Effect - If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ - Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have) which do not suffer from the memory effect.
Bonus Tip #1: Turn off the autosave function. MS-Word’s and Excel’s autosave functions are great but because they keep saving regular intervals, they work your hard driver harder than it may have to. If you plan to do this, you may want to turn it back on as the battery runs low. While it saves battery life in the beginning, you will want to make sure your work is saved when your battery dies.

Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you’re constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up. How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible? Here are 15 easy ways to do so.
1. Defrag regularly - The faster your hard drive does its work - less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.
2. Dim your screen - Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.
3. Cut down on programs running in the background. Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.
4. Cut down external devices - USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.
5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.
6. Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD - As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming. They spin, taking power, even when they?re not actively being used. Wherever possible, try to run on virtual drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.
7. Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.
8. Take care of your battery - Exercise the Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)
9. Hibernate not standby - Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.
10. Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner, or refer to some extra tips by LapTopMag.com.
11. Set up and optimize your power options - Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).
12. Don’t multitask - Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed!
13. Go easy on the PC demands - The more you demand from your PC. Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD. If you’ve got a single battery charge - pick your priorities wisely.
14. Get yourself a more efficient laptop - Laptops are getting more and more efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries. Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix.
15. Prevent the Memory Effect - If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ - Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have) which do not suffer from the memory effect.
